Accumulation differences of microplastics with different particle sizes and concentrations in zebrafish and commercial fish larvae

Abstract
[Objective]This study investigated the effects of microplastic particle size,concentration and fish species on microplastics accumulation in fish.[Method]Adult zebrafish(Danio rerio)and larvae of the four ma-jor Chinese carps were used as experimental subjects.Adult zebrafish were exposed to polystyrene microplastics of different sizes and then transferred to clean water for excretion after exposure.The larvae of silver carp(Hy-pophthalmichthys molitrix)were exposed to different concentrations of microplastics,while larvae of the four major Chinese carps including cyprinid(Mylopharyngodon piceus),grass carp(Ctenopharyngodon idella),silver carp and bighead carp(Hypophthalmichthys nobilis)were exposed to the same microplastic environment.[Result]The accumulation of large-size microplastics in the guts and gills of adult zebrafish was significantly higher than that of small-size microplastics throughout the exposure period.The excretion rates of the guts for large-size and small-size microplastics at 3 h were(85.79±3.72)%and(95.20±1.91)%,respectively,with the guts showing a sig-nificantly higher excretion rate for smaller microplastics;the excretion rate in the gills for both large-size and small-size microplastics was 100%at 3 h.Silver carp larvae accumulated(15.5±5.4),(70.1±14.8)and(198±41.3)ng·ind.-1 at low,medium and high microplastics concentrations,respectively,with accumulation increasing significantly with microplastic concentration.The accumulation of microplastics by larvae of the four major Chi-nese carps were cyprinid carp(54.9±17.6)ng·ind.-1,grass carp(84.8±19.6)ng·ind.-1,silver carp(70.1±14.8)ng·ind.-1 and bighead carp(74.8±26.0)ng·ind.-1,but no significant interspecific differences were observed.[Con-clusion]These findings provide a reference for the pattern of accumulation and excretion of microplastics in fish,and provide a scientific basis for people to formulate fish conservation policies and take conservation measures.关键词
