Abstract

In order to solve the key problems of polyurethane foam,which is extremely flammable and prone to release a large amount of heat and smoke after ignition,an efficient and environmentally friendly flame-retardant coating is designed and constructed for the reduction of fire hazards of flexible polyurethane foam(FPUF).Considering the flame retardancy and the safety of the selected materials,an environmentally friendly coating is deposited alternately on the surface of FPUF using carbon black,chitosan,and phytic acid as original materials,which provides FPUF with favorable flame retardant properties by layer-by-layer self-assembly technique(LBL).The modified foams show a remarkable fire safety owing to the combined effect of the flame retardant coating in the condensed and gas phases.Compared with the foam without coating modification(FPUF-0BL),the weight of the foam(FPUF-6BL)with six layers of flame retardant coating increases by 45.6%.Meanwhile,the intact char structure is maintained,and the amount of residual carbon increases by 20.76%.The peak heat release rate,peak smoke release rate and total smoke generation of FPUF-6BL are reduced by 44.5%,43.4%and 65.3%,respectively.The layer-by-layer self-assembly flame retardant coating designed in this work provides an effective solution to minimize the fire hazards of polyurethane foams and guarantees the safety of foam applications.
