Abstract

Strong earthquakes often lead to the development of adverse geologic hazards such as collapses,landslides,debris flows,etc.Between the catastrophe units,a chain of geohazards is simple to build,complicating the mechanism of geohazard generation.Taking Shaofang Gully as the research object,we study the characteristics,mechanism,and evolution process of the landslide-debris flow geohazard chain through field investigation and modeling calculation.This study reveals that the Shaofang Gully exhibits a cascade effect,spatial and temporal expansiveness,time lag influence and difficult prediction within the landslide-debris flow geohazard chain.The mechanics of geohazard can trace their origins to the Wenchuan 8.0 magnitude earthquake,which triggers a cumulative slope surface displacement of 18.36 cm—surpassing the critical sliding threshold of the Longmen Mountain earthquake zone.This displacement results in landslides,and the accumulations squeeze the channel to form a dam.Under the action of debris flow impact,erosion and rainfall infiltration,dam break forms flood-induced debris flow.The evolutionary sequence of this geohazard chain unfolds across six different stages:pre-earthquake incubation,slope destabilization induced by seismic activity,the downward progression of landslides leading to channel obstruction and dam formation,dam-triggered outbursts culminating in flood-associated debris flows,recurring instances of unstable sliding,and the iterative occurrence of debris flows and landslides.In summary,the geohazard chain observed in the Shaofang Gully region is emblematic of complexity,with its formation predominantly steered by the interplay of potent earthquakes and rainfall dynamics.Under the influence of precipitation,debris flows and landslides are continuously generated in the Shaofang Gully,causing debris flows,debris flows,outburst flood-related debris flows,and landslides to repeatedly appear throughout the basin.
