Distribution characteristics and migration-transformation mechanisms of inorganic nitrogen in aquifers of agricultural irrigation areas in the Hetao Basin

Abstract
Excessive nitrate and ammonium nitrogen in groundwater pose risks to human health and ecosystems.The Hetao Basin is a typical inland sedimentary basin in China,and the problem of groundwater nitrogen pollution is particularly prominent due to the influence of agriculture and livestock development.However,the sources and transformation mechanisms of nitrogen in the groundwater system of the Hetao Basin remain poorly understood.This study utilized geochemical analyses and multi-isotope techniques to investigate the distribution characteristics and transformation processes of nitrogen in the aquifer system of a typical agricultural irrigation area in the Hetao Basin.The findings are as follows:①The concentration of NH+4-N in groundwater within the study ranges from 0.33 to 53.09 mg/L,with an average value of 6.79 mg/L.The concentration of NH+4-N ranges from 0.18 to 7.45 mg/L,with an average value of 1.65 mg/L.High nitrate concentrations are primarily distributed in shallow aquifers,while high ammonium concentrations are observed across all aquifers.② Nitrate in groundwater mainly originates from manure/sewage and natural organic nitrogen.With increasing depth,the sources of high ammonium concentrations shift from fertilizers and soil nitrogen to the degradation of nitrogen-containing organic matter.③Denitrification and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium(DNRA)are the main transformation processes of nitrogen in groundwater.The strongly reducing conditions and abundant organic matter in deep aquifers enhance the degradation of nitrogen-rich organic matter,leading to the accumulation of ammonium nitrogen.关键词
