Pollution characteristics,ecological risks and source apportionment of heavy metals in sediments of Wangmu Lake and Yezhu Lake

Abstract
To investigate the pollution characteristics,ecological risks,and potential sources of heavy metals in the surface sediments of Wangmu Lake and Yezhu Lake,and to accurately identify key pollutants and priority-controlled pollution sources,the spatial distribution patterns of eight heavy metal elements(Cr,Ni,Pb,Cu,Cd,As,Hg,Zn)were analyzed.Multiple assessment methods,including the geo-accumulation index,pollution load index,potential ecological risk index,and sediment quality guidelines,were employed to evaluate the contamination levels and ecological risks of heavy metals in the sediments.Additionally,correlation analysis and positive matrix factorization(PMF)modeling were applied to quantitatively identify the contribution of different pollution sources.The results indicated that Hg in the sediments of both lakes posed a moderate ecological risk,with Yezhu Lake exhibiting moderate Hg contamination.Ni was found to frequently induce toxic effects.The key pollutants of concern in both lakes were Hg and Ni.Source apportionment revealed that the heavy metals in the surface sediments of Wangmu Lake and Yezhu Lake primarily originated from four sources:aquaculture activities(32.35%),composite pollution from industrial and agricultural activities(18.23%),traffic-related pollution and atmospheric deposition(32.43%),and natural sources(16.98%).Among them,traffic pollution and atmospheric deposition were identified as the priority-controlled pollution sources for targeted sediment management in both lakes.关键词
