Abstract

A strengthening technique utilizing stainless steel strips has been proposed for masonry structures to address the shortcomings of traditional masonry strengthening methods,such as complex construction processes,excessive reliance on wet operations,and significant disturbance to the existing structure.To validate the effectiveness of this technique,quasi-static tests were performed on eight masonry wall specimens designed with varying parameters.Test variables included the presence or absence of strengthening measures,aspect ratios of wall,the presence or absence of edge restraint components,and the spacing of stainless steel strips.Based on the experimental results,the influence of these parameters on the load-bearing capacity,ductility,hysteretic energy dissipation,stiffness degradation,and damage evolution of the strengthened masonry walls was comparatively analyzed.The results indicate that,compared with the unreinforced specimen,the cracking load of stainless steel strip-strengthened masonry walls increases by an average of 24%,and the peak load rises by an average of 16%.The stainless steel strip strengthening technique significantly enhances the ultimate deformation capacity and energy dissipation capacity of the masonry structures.For strengthened masonry walls with an aspect ratio of 0.6,the ultimate displacement is twice that of the unreinforced wall,while the energy dissipation capacity is 9.3 times that of the unreinforced wall.For walls with an aspect ratio of 1.0,the ultimate displacement is 2.3 times that of the unreinforced wall,and the energy dissipation capacity is 6.5 times that of the unreinforced wall.The addition of edge restraint components further improves the ultimate displacement and energy dissipation capacity of the strengthened masonry walls.For the wall with an aspect ratio of 0.6,the ultimate displacement is 3.0 times that of the unreinforced wall,and the energy dissipation capacity is 14.5 times that of the unreinforced wall.For the wall with an aspect ratio of 1.0,the ultimate displacement is 2.5 times that of the unreinforced wall,and the energy dissipation capacity is 18.3 times that of the unreinforced wall.Additionally,the spacing of the stainless steel strips has a limited influence on the seismic performance of the walls.
