Ambivalence in the Ritualistic Return Practices of Labor-Oriented Overseas Chinese:A Case Study of Qingtian,a Hometown of Overseas Chinese

Abstract
A large number of labor-oriented overseas Chinese have been subjected to tremendous social pressure due to the stereotypical perception of affluence and generosity towards overseas Chinese among residents in Qingtian,a hometown of overseas Chinese,particularly in social interactions after returning home.Through fieldwork method,this article demonstrates the ritualistic return practices of overseas Chinese,revealing the ambivalence between public prestige and private anxieties among labor-oriented overseas Chinese.The prestige-driven mentality motivates grassroots overseas Chinese to conduct return rituals,while the anxiety-laden mentality reduces their return frequency and weakens their willingness for social interaction after returning home.关键词
