Abstract

Engineering disturbances lead to a gradual reduction in the cohesion and internal friction an-gle of rock mass structural planes,thus resulting in the degradation of their mechanical properties.This deterioration induces slip,collapse,or toppling of rock masses along dominant structural planes,ulti-mately triggering instability and failure.Therefore,investigating the strength degradation characteristics of structural planes is a prerequisite for analyzing rock mass stability.This study employs Barton's JRC-JCS model,combined with on-site rebound tests,to explore the shear strength characteristics of rock mass structural planes.By integrating stress analysis under engineering disturbances and the Cou-lomb-Navier criterion,the degradation mechanisms of structural planes under such disturbances are re-vealed.The results demonstrate that the shear strength and associated parameters of rock mass disconti-nuities exhibit a decreasing trend as the distance to the free surface diminishes,accompanied by an in-creasing magnitude of degradation.This indicates that closer proximity to the free surface amplifies the influence of external factors.When the cohesion reduction coefficient kc and internal friction angle re-duction coefficient kφ decrease,the degradation of cohesion and internal friction angle intensifies,lead-ing to a lower shear strength.Both kc and kφ decrease with reduced distance to the free surface,high-lighting the pronounced strength reduction effect near the free surface and the intensified degradation of shallow rock mass structural planes under disturbances.These findings enrich fundamental theories on the deterioration of rock mass structural planes and provide critical scientific insights and practical val-ue for the prevention and mitigation of geological hazards.
