Abstract
As a New Year's Day custom, the efficacy of Pepper and Cypress Wine has undergone several changes from the Han Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty. In the Han Dynasty, due to the immortal connotations of pepper seeds and cypress leaves,it was endowed with the efficacy of bringing longevity and good fortune.During the Wei,Jin,Southern and Northern Dynasties, influenced by the plagues, its main efficacy shifted to dispelling disasters and preventing epidemics. In the Tang and Song dynasties, the function of epidemic prevention was weakened, and it was mostly used for celebrating longevity and welcoming spring. In the Ming and Qing dynasties, the functions of welcoming spring and preventing epidemics coexisted, and Pepper and Cypress Wine had a dual identity as both a folk symbol and a medical practice. The direct cause of the change in the efficacy of Pepper and Cypress Wine was the great plagues during the edge of the Han and Jin dynasties. The frequent occurrence of plagues led to disease anxiety, which made people pay attention to its pharmacological functions. The resistance witchcraft practiced by the people in response to the epidemics served as a catalyst for this transformation. As a result,Pepper and Cypress Wine was given the ability to ward offevil and dispel disasters, becoming a weapon for people to fight against epidemics. The use of Pepper and Cypress Wine and the change in its efficacy are concrete manifestations of the integration of witchcraft and medicine in ancient times.Although drinking Pepper and Cypress Wine has a witchcraft color,it also provides spiritual support for the people in the fight against epidemics.关键词
