Treasure and Medicine:The Transmission of Coral and Its Medicinal Knowledge on the Silk Road
摘要
Abstract
Coral is renowned not only as an organic gem but also as a medicinal material. It has a long history of use and wide geographical spread, primarily sourced from the Mediterranean coast. As a trade good and tribute, coral was transmitted eastward via the Maritime and Land Silk Roads. This material transmission was paralleled by a fusion of cultural exchanges, notably in the sharing and integration of medicinal knowledge. In the first century AD,ancient Roman medicine had already included coral in its pharmaceutical system. As coral made its way eastward, the medicinal knowledge associated with it also spread across the Eurasian continent.Arabian medicine directly inherited the knowledge, applying it more broadly in clinical settings.Indian medicine was also influenced by this transmission. In the Tang Dynasty, the medicinal knowledge of coral was introduced into China, where it was incorporated into medical practices.Chinese medical practitioners merged the foreign knowledge, integrating coral into the traditional Chinese materia medica, making it a part of Chinese herbal medicine. This integration led to further developments, with its use continuing to the present day.The history of coral and its medicinal knowledge exemplifies the material and cultural integration along the Silk Road, serving as a classic case for deeper exploration.关键词
