Water Vapor Characteristics during Blizzard Processes on the Northern Slope of the Central Tianshan Mountains of Xinjiang

Abstract

Using NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data,this study investigates the water vapor characteristics of 45 blizzard events on the northern slope of central Tianshan Mountains in Xinjiang from January to December during 1991-2020.The Euler method and the HYSPLIT trajectory model are employed to analyze the data.The analysis using the Euler method reveals that the water vapor driving blizzards in this region primarily originates from the Atlantic Ocean,with supplementary contributions from the Arabian Sea,the Red Sea,and the Mediterranean Sea.Water vapor is transported into the region through the western boundary,the mid-to-lower layers of the northern boundary,and the mid-to-upper layers of the southern boundary,with the northern boundary providing the largest input of moisture.The HYSPLIT trajectory model analysis further indicates that the water vapor contributions primarily come from Europe and Central Asia,followed by the Mediterranean,the Black Sea and its surrounding areas,as well as the Atlantic Ocean and its coasts.Water vapor from Europe and Central Asia is mainly transported to altitudes of 700 hPa and below,while water vapor from the Mediterranean,Black Sea,and Atlantic Ocean primarily reaches altitudes above 700 hPa,with 80%concentrated in the lower troposphere.Once it reaches the key area via westerly airflow,the water vapor predominantly enters the blizzard region along west-southwest and northwest pathways.At 500 hPa,the west-southwest pathway is dominant,whereas at 700 hPa and below,the northwest pathway is more significant.Based on these findings,a water vapor contribution configuration for the mid-to-lower troposphere during blizzards on the northern slope of central Tianshan Mountains is proposed.
