Triggering and Maintenance Mechanisms of Disastrous Double Squall Lines in the Context of a Cold Vortex

Abstract
Using observations from regional automatic weather stations,ERA5 reanalysis,FY-4A satellite data,and Doppler radar,this study investigates the synoptic background,environmental conditions,triggering mechanisms,and sustaining dynamics of a double squall line event that impacted Shandong on June 13,2022,under a cold vortex background.Key findings include:The event involved two consecutive squall lines,a locally developed squall line in Shandong(Squall Line A)and a squall line originating from Shanxi and Hebei(Squall Line B).Strong northwesterly flow behind the cold vortex transported cold,dry air over a low-level warm ridge,creating a thermally unstable environment with high Convective Available Potential Energy(CAPE)and significant total instability,favoring squall line development.Squall Line A was triggered by a surface convergence line in northwestern Shandong,an 850 hPa dryline,and a gust front south of a convective storm over the Bohai Sea,while Squall Line B initiation was linked to a surface secondary cold front and solar heating.Squall Line A was sustained by slantwise ascent of warm,moist inflow(generating upper-level divergence)and rear descending airflow-induced convergence.Its self-organized structure combined environmental inflow and storm outflow,persisting despite weak vertical wind shear in northern Shandong.Moisture and energy south of central Shandong further supported maintenance,with expansion of the rear stratiform cloud region.After Squall Line A affected eastern Henan and southwestern Shandong,rapid reestablishment of low-level convective conditions and moderate vertical wind shear facilitated Squall Line B's persistence.These findings enhance the understanding of squall line dynamics in Shandong under cold vortex conditions.关键词
