Abstract

Science education plays a crucial role in cultivating talent for scientific and technological innovation in China and serves as a key foundation for enhancing the scientific literacy of the general public.Currently,advanced technologies—particularly AI agents for education—are emerging as significant drivers of the digital transformation in subject-based teaching.Understanding the conceptual features and application value of educational AI agents,along with strategies for effectively integrating them into high-quality science education at the primary and secondary levels,has become a focal point of academic and practical interest.This study outlines three representative developmental stages of educational AI agents and synthesizes their core features across four dimensions:multimodal content generation and knowledge integration;precise intent recognition and reasoning-based decision-making;personalized and scalable learning support;and transferability across scenarios with diverse interactive experiences.In parallel,the paper highlights the value of AI agents in enhancing science education.Moreover,three exemplary application scenarios are presented to demonstrate how AI agents can empower student-centered learning in the science:autonomous scientific inquiry,personalized scientific argumentation,and diagnostic assessment of scientific thinking.Based on these applications,the study proposes four strategic directions for future implementation:enhancing scientific knowledge delivery,enriching instructional strategies,improving technological toolsets,and advancing human-AI collaboration.These strategies aim to inform and guide the meaningful integration of AI agents into science education practice.
