Abstract

Low-Density Parity-Check(LDPC)Codes are a class of linear block codes with characteristics of sparse check matrices and their performance can approach the channel capacity limit.Because they have low-decoding complexity,and are very suitable for parallel decoding to support high-throughput transmission,LDPC codes have been selected by 3GPP as the channel coding scheme for 5G data channels.The 5G LDPC coding chain is described,and a hardware architecture is proposed for the codec that is easy to implement in hardware and supports all 5G LDPC code lengths and code rates.A high-order Quadrature Amplitude Modulation(QAM)modulation/demodulation hardware architecture is also introduced.And the appropriate decoding algorithm and quantization-bit width are determined.A Field-Programmable Gate Array(FPGA)is used to simulate a 5G LDPC coding chain on a Xilinx Virtex UltraScale+VCU118 platform.The results show that the the designed 5G LDPC coding chain system has less hardware resource consumption and the performance is close to that of the software simulation.Specifically,for different code rates R with information length K=1 440 and 6 080,as well as for K=2 368(R=1/2),and K=8 192(R=8/9)under various modulation schemes,the measured hardware performance curves all meet the expectations.The resource consumption of the individual modules in the coding chain indicates that this design reduces the usage of Logic Unit(LUT)and Flip-Flop(FF)by 10%and 40%,respectively,compared with existing works.This validates the superiority and feasibility of the designed encoding chain system.
