Abstract

A simplified approach was developed to analyze the response of large-scale inclined pile groups subjected to combined vertical,horizontal,bending and torsional loading based on the assumption of semi-infinite elastic soil.The effects of various pile-soil-pile interactions between two adjacent inclined piles with arbitrary orientations and angles in 3D space were calculated.Firstly,the analysis of interactions among various types of pile head deformations between the two inclined piles was simplified to focus on the main aspects of their interaction.Specifically,it examines that the axial displacement,lateral displacement,and torsional rotation of one pile head affect the three deformation components of the adjacent pile head.Secondly,free-field displacement attenuation coefficients were used to quantify the decay patterns of vertical,horizontal and torsional displacements of soil surface along the radial direction.Finally,the virtual pile hypothesis and coordinate transformation were employed to derive matrix expression for the interactions between that two arbitrarily oriented inclined piles.The approach was implemented in the pile group analysis program PIGEAN.The results show that pile head responses(axial,lateral,and torsional)can be approximated by using analytical or approximate solutions for vertical piles under corresponding loads.Three sets of model tests validate the approach under different load combinations.The proposed 3D interaction analysis method effectively captures pile-soil-pile interactions and improves computational accuracy.The proposed approach is computationally efficient to predict the response of large-scale pile groups under complex loads.
