Abstract

The aim of this study is to gain an in-depth understanding of the dry matter storage and spatial distribution patterns of coarse woody debris(CWD)of Populus euphratica under extreme arid conditions and enhance our comprehension of the stability and multifunctionality of forest ecosystems under drought stress.The natural P.euphratica forest in the lower reaches of the Tarim River was selected as the study area.Four 100 m×100 m CWD sampling plots were arranged at different distances(200,450,750,and 1 100 m)from the river channel.The adjacent grid method and point pattern analysis were employed to investigate P.euphratica CWD of varying types,diameter classes,and decomposition levels.The results indicated that the density of P.euphratica CWD ranged from 74 to 119 plant·hm-2 and the dry matter storage ranged from 2.89 to 11.59 t·hm-2.Dead-and-down trees,large-diameter CWD,and moderately decomposed CWD were the predominant forms.As the distance from the river channel increased,the overall spatial distribution of P.euphratica CWD gradually shifted from an aggregated distribution pattern on small scales(0-3 m)to a random distribution pattern.Only the large-diameter CWD exhibited a clear aggregated distribution pattern on the specific spatial scales(0-3 m).Despite a tendency toward aggregation on the same scale,other forms of CWD generally displayed a random distribution pattern.The low dry matter storage of P.euphratica CWD was positioned at the lower limit of the range observed in Chinese forests.The spatial distribution pattern of P.euphratica CWD with distance from the river channel are closely related to the water and heat conditions as well as interspecific competition observed along the Arghan monitoring transect.
