Can Internet Usage Promote the Social Integration of Rural Elderly Population?——An Empirical Analysis Based on CHARLS Data

Abstract
Against the backdrop of digitization,rural senior citizens find themselves in a triply disadvan-taged situation characterized by insufficient digital infrastructure,geographical constraints,and aging.This confluence of factors renders their social integration issues particularly pronounced.This paper utili-zes data from CHARLS(2020)and employs the Entropy Weight Method to construct indicators of social integration.It further analyzes the impact of Internet usage on the social integration of rural senior citizens through Ordinary Least Squares(OLS),Propensity Score Matching(PSM),and Mediation Models.The results indicate that Internet usage significantly enhances the social integration of rural senior citizens,with social involvement serving as an intermediary factor accounting for 13.5％of this effect.Regional a-nalysis reveals that seniors in eastern and central regions derive greater benefits from Internet usage com-pared to those in western and northeastern regions,where effects are less pronounced.Age-related anal-ysis demonstrates that older individuals experience more substantial benefits from Internet usage than their younger counterparts.These findings aim to establish a high-quality development model for elderly-ori-ented digital technology characterized by multi-party coordination and supply-demand equilibrium.They underscore the correlation between Internet usage and social integration among rural senior citizens.Furthermore,these insights can help bridge the digital divide in rural areas while providing policy refer-ences and recommendations aimed at enhancing the social integration of seniors within rural communities,ultimately fostering harmonious digitization processes.关键词
