Abstract

The area near the Kuril Islands is renowned as one of the most foggy sea areas globally with rare research about sea fog here.It has been noted that under southerly winds,the sea fog primarily re-sults from advection and cooling.However,the formation mechanism of sea fog under northerly winds remains unclear.On August 21,2019,during China's 10th Arctic research mission conducted by the scientific research vessel"Xiangyanghong 01",low clouds transitioned into sea fog under northerly winds near the north Kuril Islands.This paper aims to analyze the process of sea fog formation by using shaip-based observation data and reanalysis data.The findings reveal that during the occurrence of sea fog,there was a slow-moving blocking high system present over the North Pacific Ocean.Additionally,Okhotsk High moved to the northwest,and its eastern side was covered by sea fog.Such stable circula-tion conditions provide a background for sustaining the long-term maintenance of sea fog.From August 19 to 21,there was a significant enhancement in airflow over the Kamchatka Peninsula resulting in en-hanced warm advection from land to sea and from high latitudes to lower latitudes,especially in alti-tudes ranging from 925 to 950 hPa along its west coast.As warm dry air moves over moist air,it inten-sifies inversion strength leading to lowering cloud top height and forming sea fog due to decreased inver-sion base height.Under north winds,sub-cloud air gets wet by the continued evaporation of the warm sea surface of the east Okhotsk Sea while sub-cloud air is cooled down by the cold sea surface surrounding the Kuril Islands and these saturate the relative humidity to promote the downward development of clouds to form sea fog.
