Abstract

A winglet at the blade tip can significantly improve the power efficiency of a horizontal-axis tidal turbine.However,in real sea conditions,tidal turbine often need to operate under certain yaw an-gles.It is not yet known how a winglet may affect the performance of tidal turbines under yaw condi-tions.In this study,a numerical model of a horizontal axis tidal turbine is established using computa-tional fluid dynamics(CFD)method and validated through experimental tests in a wave tank.Subse-quently,the hydrodynamic performance and wake characteristics of a tidal turbine with and without a winglet is compared and analyzed under incoming flow yaw angles ranging from 0° to 30°.The research results showed that when the yaw angle was small(No more than 12°),a tidal turbine with winglets tends to have an increase in power coefficient CP;however,as the yaw angle continued to increase,CP shows a significant decrease.During this process,the change trend of axial load coefficient CT of the turbine is consistent with that of CP.Overall,a winglet at the blade tips can prevent rapid decline of swept area for tidal turbines under yaw conditions,thereby keeping the performance of the tidal turbine.
