Abstract

Southern Xinjiang is a key production region for high-quality cotton in China,with abundant reserves of cotton straw.To broaden the utilization pathways and scope of cotton straw,an indoor accelerated salt erosion dry wet salt freeze-thaw cycle test was independently designed.This test aimed to simulate the influence of cotton straw fibers on the water stability performance of AC-13 asphalt mixtures under the severe natural conditions in Southern Xinjiang.Basalt fiber asphalt mixtures were used as the control group,while common asphalt mixtures served as the blank group.The improvement mechanism of cotton straw fibers on the water stability performance of asphalt mixtures was investigated from a microscopic perspective by integrating electron microscopy scanning(SEM)and infrared spectroscopy techniques.The test results indicate that,under identical experimental conditions,both the void ratio and the freeze-thaw splitting strength ratio of the asphalt mixture exhibit a downward trend as the number of dry wet salt freeze-thaw cycles increases Under the same number of dry wet salt freeze-thaw cycles,basalt fibers demonstrated the most significant enhancement in the water stability performance of asphalt mixtures,followed by cotton straw fibers.However,the addition of cotton straw fibers significantly improved the mixture's resistance in the composite salt test environment.Microscopic analysis reveals that the phase change(liquid-solid)of the salt solution within the internal voids of the mixture,induced by the dry-wet-freeze-thaw cycles,punctures the asphalt film layer on the aggregate surface and simultaneously increases the internal voids of the mixture.This phenomenon is the primary cause of the decline in the water stability performance of the mixture.Meanwhile,the bridging and toughening effects of the fibers enhance the mixture's resistance to water damage.These findings elucidate the improvement effect of cotton straw fibers on the water stability performance of asphalt pavements under the natural environment of saline soil in southern Xinjiang,providing reference for promoting the application of cotton straw fiber in asphalt pavement in southern Xinjiang.
