Abstract

It is of great significance to study the deformation behavior of soils under active and passive effective stresses to describe the mechanical behavior of unsaturated soils.Shrinkage and compression are the response of soils.The relationship between void ratio and passive effective stress on a logarithmic scale is defined as the normal compression line(NCL).At present,the effective stress-based constitutive models assume that the shrinkage de-formation line deviates from NCL immediately after the de-saturation(Sr<1),which has not been experimentally confirmed.In this study,a series of soil shrinkage deformation results were reanalyzed on the effective stress plane.The relationship between shrinkage deformation line and NCL was studied.The results shown that the shrinkage de-formation line deviates from NCL in unsaturated states;For compacted soils,the shrinkage deformation line coin-cides with NCL within a saturation range of 0.6~1.0;The compression indexes on active effective stress plane are larger due to both macro and micro-pores are affected during drying;For reconstituted soil,the saturation ranges that shrinkage deformation line coincides with NCL is wider,the compression index in active and passive effective stress planes is also more consistent because of the more uniform pore size distribution.
