Effects of Seed Treatment Methods and Seeding Rate per Hill on Seedling Quality and Seed Cost in Pot Tray Seedling Raising of Indica Hybrid Rice

Abstract
This study aims to investigate the effects of seed treatment methods and seeding rate per hill on seedling quality and seed cost in pot tray seedling raising of indica hybrid rice.The indica hybrid rice variety Taifengyou 79 was used as the experimental material.Two seed treatment methods(soaking seeds for 48 h and dry seeds)and five seeding rate treatments(1,2,3,4 and 5 seeds per hill)were set up to study the differences in seedling emergence,seedling quality and seed cost under different seed treatment methods and seeding rates per hill.The results showed that compared with the dry seed treatment,the seed soaking treatment increased the average number of seedlings per hill and seedling emergence rate by 20.56%and 19.98%,respectively.Increasing the seeding rate per hill enhanced the seedling emergence rate and the number of seedlings per hill,with dry seeds sown at 3~5 seeds per hill and soaked seeds sown at 2~5 seeds per hill achieving>95%seedling emergence.However,seedling quality showed a gradual deterioration trend with the increase of seeding rate.Under the seed soaking treatment,compared with sowing three soaked seeds per hill,sowing five soaked seeds per hill decreased the number of tillers per plant,stem base width,dry shoot weight per 100 seedlings and strong seedling index by 100%,13.73%,29.41%and 40.90%,respectively,and decreased the total root length and the number of root tips by 33.72%and 34.92%,respectively,and the differences all reached a significant level.Compared with sowing five seeds per hill,sowing one seed per hill reduced the seed quantity and seed cost per hectare by 75.68%and 75.67%under the dry seed treatment and by 75.66%and 75.68%under the seed soaking treatment,respectively;sowing 2~3 seeds per hill decreased the seed quantity and seed cost by 39.14%~58.05%under the dry seed treatment and by 39.15%~58.07%under the seed soaking treatment,respectively.Considering the seedling emergence(>95%),seedling quality and seed cost comprehensively,the optimal seeding rates were determined as three seeds per hill for dry seeds and two seeds per hill for soaked seeds,which can effectively improve seedling quality while minimizing seed costs in the pot tray seedling raising of indica hybrid rice.关键词
