Effect of massage therapy on the intervention of restless legs syndrome in hemodialysis patients:a Meta-analysis

Abstract
Objective:To systematically evaluate the intervention effect of massage therapy on restless legs syndrome(RLS)in hemodialysis(HD)patients,and to provide evidence for non-pharmacological interventions for RLS in HD patients.Methods:A Chinese and English search strategy was developed to search published literature in the China national knowledge infrastructure(CNKI),Wanfang database,PubMed,Embase,and The Cochrane Library databases from the year of construction to April 2024.Quality assessment of the literature was performed by 2 researchers according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria,literature screening and data extraction,and statistically analyzed using RevMan 5.4 software.Results:The eight included literature were published in the years 2015-2022 in Iran,Turkey,and China,and all eight studies were RCTs with a total sample size of 435 cases,of which seven were based on the restless legs syndrome scores(RLSS)as an outcome indicator,and one was based on the international restless legs syndrome severity rating scale(IRLS),3 articles used the pittsburgh sleep quality index(PSQI)as the outcome indicator,and 2 articles used the short form of 36 health survey questionnaires on quality of life(SF-36)as the outcome indicator,1 SF-36 was unable to extract an effect value.Eight of the included papers reported the effect of massage therapy on RLS intervention in HD patients using a random-effects model,and the results suggested that massage therapy could improve the severity of RLS in HD patients[MD=-7.97,95%CI(-12.92 to-3.02),Z=3.16,P＜0.01].The effect of massage therapy on PSQI intervention in HD patients was reported in three included studies using a random effects model,which suggested that there was no statistically significant difference in PSQI scores in HD patients with massage therapy[MD=-2.12,95%CI(-4.82 to 0.59),Z=1.53,P=0.12].Conclusion:The available evidence suggests that massage therapy is effective in reducing RLS symptoms and lessening the severity of RLS in HD patients,and the effect on improving sleep quality needs to be further explored.It is recommended that clinical staff use non-pharmacological measures to manage RLS-related psychological and physiological conditions in HD patients,and massage therapy can be implemented early for them to improve their symptomatic outcomes.关键词
