Abstract

To improve the efficiency of constructed wetlands in treating p-xylene(PX)wastewater while reducing operational costs,this study employed a low-cost acid corrosion method to modify ceramsite substrates and enhance their performance.Techniques such as SEM,BET,and XRD were used to investigate the physicochemical changes in ceramsite before and after modification.Adsorption experiments and biofilm attachment measurements were conducted to determine the optimal hydrofluoric acid modification concentration.Modified and unmodified ceramsite were used as substrates in vertical flow constructed wetlands to treat PX wastewater,and a 160-day comparative experiment was carried out.The effects of hydraulic retention time(HRT)and ceramsite modification on PX removal efficiency were examined,while high-throughput sequencing was used to analyze changes in microbial communities within the constructed wetland reactors.The results showed that hydrofluoric acid modification increased the specific surface area,pore volume,and average pore size of the ceramsite,significantly enhancing biofilm attachment.The adsorption of PX by modified ceramsite followed pseudo-first-order kinetics and the Langmuir model,indicating a predominantly physical adsorption process.At an HRT of 24 h,the modified ceramsite constructed wetland reactor achieved the best PX removal efficiency,the highest α diversity index,and the greatest relative abundance of dominant species.The species abundance at the phylum and genus levels in the constructed wetland reactor samples varied under different HRTs and ceramsite modification conditions.Under the same HRT,the abundance of dominant genera in the microbial community of the modified ceramsite reactor(CWB)was higher than that in the unmodified ceramsite reactor(CWA).Additionally,at lower HRTs,CWB maintained a higher abundance of dominant genera and a PX removal rate of approximately 80%,demonstrating the advantages of ceramsite modification.These findings highlight the critical role of acid-modified ceramsite in vertical flow constructed wetlands for treating low-concentration PX wastewater,providing data support for future practical applications in PX treatment.
