Abstract

Odor pollution from urban stormwater inlets in China has become a severe environmental issue,affecting public health and quality of life.To address this problem,this study investigated the odor levels,spatiotemporal variations in odor intensity,and influencing factors of odor pollution in stormwater inlets across three functional areas:dining zones,commercial-office zones,and residential zones.The results indicate that the degree of odor pollution in stormwater inlets follows the order:dining zones>commercial-office zones>residential zones.In dining zones,88.7% of stormwater inlets exhibited odor pollution at level 4 or higher,indicating strong odor emissions.The odor intensity in dining and commercial-office zones was significantly higher in summer compared to other seasons,and daytime odor pollution was more pronounced than at night.The content of food waste(r=0.647,P<0.01)and temporarily stored wastewater(r=0.845,P<0.01)in stormwater inlets showed a significant positive correlation with odor intensity.Additionally,the concentrations of COD(r=0.88,P<0.01),SO42-(r=0.896,P<0.01),and TN(r=0.851,P<0.01)in temporarily stored wastewater were significantly positively correlated with odor intensity,while dissolved oxygen(DO)concentration(r=-0.913,P<0.01)showed a significant negative correlation.The content of food waste and temporarily stored wastewater was significantly positively correlated with COD,SO42-,and TN concentrations,and significantly negatively correlated with DO concentration.The primary sources of odor in stormwater inlets are volatile sulfides and volatile organic acids produced by the degradation of organic matter under low dissolved oxygen conditions.These compounds contribute to odor emissions at rates of 85.01% and 2.89%,respectively.
