Abstract

To insight into the impact of vortex structures in the wind turbine wake on the meandering motions of wakes,large eddy simulation(LES)based on the actuator line model was employed to numerically simulate the wake of a NREL 5.0 MW wind turbine under uniform inflow conditions.The wake structures were thoroughly analyzed using proper orthogonal decomposition(POD)and spectral proper orthogonal decomposition(SPOD)methods.The results of the large eddy simulation revealed that the motions of the wind turbine wake originate from the amplification of flow structures,with the characteristic frequency of wake meandering remaining constant along the downstream direction.POD decomposition indicated that the motion of the wind turbine wake is predominantly influenced by two pairs of counter-rotating vortex structures,and the frequency of wake meandering can be accurately described by the time-varying characteristics of these vortices.The SPOD decomposition results demonstrate that the energy of the wind turbine wake is concentrated primarily in flow structures near the characteristic frequency of meandering.Beyond the characteristic frequency,the energy of flow structures sharply decreases.This study aims to provide a profound understanding of the mechanisms behind wind turbine wake meandering and offer valuable insights for optimizing wind farm layout to mitigate the effects of wake meandering.
