Spatial characteristics of Antarctic surface air temperature and its relationship with the Southern Annular Mode

Abstract
Antarctic surface air temperature is a parameter sensitive to climate change.Based on ERA5 data,this study examined the spatial distribution characteristics of interannual surface air temperature variation over Antarctica,and the relationship between surface air temperature and the Southern Annular Mode(SAM)in different seasons.Empirical orthogonal function decomposition of surface air temperature in the four sea-sons revealed that the first and second modes explain 20%~40%and 10%~20%of the total variance,respec-tively,and that the spatial distribution is different in each season.The spatial characteristics of the first mode in austral autumn and winter and of the second mode in austral spring are similar to the spatial distribution of the SAM.The correlation coefficient between the corresponding time coefficient and the SAM index also showed that the above spatial modes are affected notably by the SAM.Compared with East Antarctica,the wind field regression analysis indicated that the advection effect can better explain the surface air tempera-ture distribution in West Antarctica.Finally,the influence of the SAM on Antarctic surface air temperature in different regions in each season was further expounded through correlation analysis and synthesis analysis.关键词
