Investigation into dynamic variable direction lane control strategies for urban road intersections

Abstract
The dynamic balance between space-time resources and traffic demand at intersections can be effec-tively achieved through variable-direction lanes,thereby improving the operational efficiency of urban road in-tersections.Infrared vehicle detectors are embedded in the middle of the lanes prior to intersection stop lines to obtain real-time lane traffic flow information.Different methods for determining average traffic volume are em-ployed to evaluate the utilization of space-time resources across lanes with varying directions within the same phase.When the difference in average traffic volume between adjacent flow directions exceeds the equivalent of two standard vehicles,the variable lane steering conversion mechanism is triggered.The saturated headway a-nalysis method is utilized to quantitatively assess the traffic efficiency during the green late phase,and the ad-justment of green-light duration for the next cycle is determined according to the proportion of saturated lanes relative to the total number of lanes.A micro-simulation model including variable lane control logic,signal tim-ing scheme and dynamic traffic sign coordination is constructed through the Vissim traffic simulation platform to generate a real-time optimized space-time resource allocation scheme for intersections.The simulation results show that after the implementation of the dynamic control strategy,the average number of stops at the intersec-tion decreases by 5.8%,the average vehicle delay is cut by 7.3%,the static stopped delay drops by 5.8%,the average queue length shortens by 28.6%,and the average speed increases by 3.0%.This verifies the sig-nificant efficacy of the intersection control strategy based on dynamic perception of traffic demand in improving traffic efficiency.关键词
