Sea fog in the Amundsen Sea,Antarctica:A case study
摘要
Abstract
Sea fog can seriously threaten maritime activities by reducing visibility, but studies on sea fog in the Antarctic region are rare.China's R/V Xuelong encountered a severe sea fog event in the Amundsen Sea in January 2019.This study analyzed the sea fog process using ship-based observations and ERA5 data ob-tained during the event. Results revealed that the sea fog event persisted for approximately 48 h during January 17-19,2019.The period of dense fog(visibility:<500 m)accounted for approximately 40%of the entire duration of the event, meaning that it was a long-lasting and intense sea fog event in the Southern Ocean.Analysis revealed that the main fog area was affected mainly by a low pressure system over the Southern Ocean.Owing to weak convergence uplift in the upper layers, the heat and moisture advection brought by the northerly wind maintained a saturated and stable structure in the lower layer.Meanwhile, the weak surface wind in the main fog area inhibited vertical transport of turbulence, and maintained the at-mospheric thermal structure and fog droplet density, which together resulted in this long-lasting sea fog event.关键词
