Abstract

Many countries have demonstrated interest in the vast resource and rich nutritional value of Antarctic krill(Euphausia superba).This study analyzed the spatiotemporal distribution of Antarctic krill fishing ac-tivities during 2019-2021 using AIS data from Chinese marine satellites and Geographic Information Sys-tem software,and explored the methodology of applying marine satellite AIS data for monitoring fishing activities in Antarctic waters.The results of the study revealed the following.(1)The area of Antarctic krill fishing is concentrated mainly in three sub-areas of Area 48,i.e.,48.1,48.2,and 48.3,with a spatial distri-bution that extends from the southwest to the northeast.(2)The period of most active Antarctic krill fishing is March—June annually.Sub-areas 48.1,48.2,and 48.3 are traditional krill fishing grounds,and while krill fishing in sub-area 48.2 shows a trend of expansion,the hotspots of krill fishing in sub-area 48.3 have be-come more scattered and oscillate annually.(3)Marine satellite AIS data can be applied effectively to the study of the spatiotemporal changes in Antarctic krill fishing activities,thereby providing important data support for the monitoring,protection,and sustainable use of Antarctic marine living resources.
