Resistance performance of polar ships in ice areas

Abstract
This study examined the important issue of the resistance performance of polar ships navigating areas of floating ice.A combined computational fluid dynamics-discrete element method approach was employed to establish a numerical ice-water pool model and a discrete element model of floating ice to simulate the process of ship navigation in areas of floating ice.Typical modes of ship-ice interaction during the naviga-tion process were investigated,and three factors(i.e.,ship speed,ice concentration,and average diameter of floating ice)were considered in comprehensive analysis of the resistance characteristics and attitude of ships navigating under different conditions.Results indicated that during ship navigation in areas of floating ice,ice resistance not only increases with the speed of the ship and the concentration of the floating ice,but also exhibits a trend of initial increase and subsequent reduction with increase in the average diameter of the floating ice.Additionally,the coupling effect of ship-water-ice interaction also results in increased resis-tance.关键词
