Current status and prospects of Antarctic aviation network

Abstract
Since the first aviation activity in the Antarctic in the 20th century,aviation has become recognized as a fast and efficient means of transportation for accessing Antarctica.However,compared with other intercon-tinental aviation routes,aviation activity in the Antarctic region is insufficient to constitute a complete Ant-arctic aviation network.Currently,there are four main intercontinental routes to and from Antarctica:Chile/Argentina—Antarctic Peninsula;Christchurch,New Zealand—McMurdo Station/Mario Zucchelli Sta-tion;Hobart,Australia—Casey Station;and Cape Town,South Africa—Queen Maud Land.This study de-veloped an automatic route extraction algorithm using Antarctic spacecraft trajectory data from December 2018 to December 2022.This algorithm was used to analyze the takeoff and landing points of different flight segments,the frequency of those segments,and the overall spatial distribution of the various countries'activities in Antarctica.The findings regarding the developmental tendencies of the aviation operations in Antarctica of other countries serve as a valuable reference for China in formulating its flight activities and implementing aviation safety measures within the Antarctic region.关键词
