Surgical treatment of giant cell tumor of bone in extremities

Abstract
Objective To investigate the effect of surgical treatment of giant cell tumor of bone in different parts of ex-tremities.Methods The 40 patients with giant cell tumor of bone of extremities were treated by curettage,curet-tage,total resection.The postoperative complications were recorded,and the clinical efficacy was evaluated according to MSTS limbs function score.Results All patients were followed up for 6～72 months.Incision exudation occurred in 4 cases;one case of proximal femoral giant cell tumor was treated with en bloc resection and prosthetic replace-ment,postoperative imaging revealed a periprosthetic fracture at the distal stem with cement leakage;another case of distal radial giant cell tumor was managed by en bloc resection and autologous fibular reconstruction,wrist joint sub-luxation was observed at 6-month follow-up.Local recurrence occurred in 5 patients(12.5%),including 2 cases of the lower femur,1 case in the distal humerus,1 case in the distal radius,and 1 in the distal ulna.At the last follow-up,the MSTS limb function scores were 20～30 points.Conclusions Different surgical methods should be selected for giant cell tumor of bone according to tumor location,Campanacci imaging grade and soft tissue mass size,in order to achieve optimal outcomes while minimizing local recurrence risk.关键词
