Abstract

[Objective]To Compare 10 different dominant height calculation methods,synthesize their ad-vantages and shortcomings,and finally recommend one or several dominant height calculation methods that are most suitable for natural spruce coniferous mixed forests in this region,thereby providing a sci-entific basis and practical guidance for dominant height research in natural spruce coniferous mixed forests.[Method]In this study,based on the natural spruce conifer mixed forest in Jingouling Forest Farm,Yanji City,Jilin Province,we compared the differences and correlations between different dominant height calculation methods(traditional dominant height estimation,adjusted maximum tree method,and U-estim-ation method)and different tree species selection criteria(C1:selecting the coarsest tree only,C2:select-ing the tallest tree only,C3:combining the coarsest tree and tree species differences,and C4:combining the tallest tree and tree species differences),and also assessed the uncertainty of stand density on domin-ant height estimation method and its influence on the dominance height estimation.The differences and correlations of the dominant height calculation methods for different species selection criteria(C1:select the thickest tree only,C2:select the tallest tree only,C3:combine the thickest tree and species differ-ences,C4:combine the tallest tree and species differences)were evaluated,and the uncertainty of stand density on the dominant height calculation methods and its effect on the dominant height estimates were assessed,as well as the correlations between the dominant height calculation methods and the indicators of standing productivity evaluation were examined.[Results](1)There were significant differences among dominant height calculation methods with mean values ranging from 14.76 m(DH10)to 20.25 m(DH2).(2)High correlation coefficients(0.77~0.98)and strong positive correlation were observed among DH1-DH9.(3)There were different trends between the 10 methods of calculating dominant height and the index of stand density,and the effects of stand density on the estimation of dominant height were small or there was a linear relationship.(4)The uncertainty of various dominant height estimation methods varied under different stand densities.The U estimation method and the adjusted maximum tree method(DH7),which considered the species difference and chose the thickest tree as the dominant tree,were the least af-fected by stand density.In contrast,the traditional method(DH2),which considered only the thickest tree and the adjusted maximum tree method(DH8),which considered the difference of tree species and chose the tallest tree as the dominant tree,were more affected by stand density.(5)The correlations between dominant height and different stand productivity evaluation indicators varied.Each dominant height calcu-lation method showed a strong correlation with weighted average height and a moderate correlation with stand stocking,stand biomass,and the periodic growth of the broken area.[Conclusion]The adjusted largest tree method(ALT)selecting tallest trees as dominant trees without considering species differenti-ation is recommended as the optimal approach for calculating dominant height in natural spruce-fir mixed coniferous forests in this region.
