Abstract

The water intake of coastal power stations is often affected by sediment deposition,leading to reduced water intake capacity and degraded water quality.Based on a case study of a coastal power station in the Bay of Bengal,this paper simulated sediment deposition in the harbor basin under both fully encircled and semi-encircled harbor layouts.It analyzed scouring and silting patterns in the harbor basin,navigation channel,and water intake open channel under strong tidal conditions after breakwater construction,and spatial distribution of scouring and silting one year post-construction.The results indicate that as time progresses,siltation in the semi-encircled harbor basin primarily occurs at the confluence of the navigation channel and the turning basin,with nearly 50%of sedimentation accumulating outside the dredged area.The maximum annual siltation intensity reaches 4 m,with total harbor basin sedimentation approaching 2 million m3/a.In contrast,siltation in the fully encircled harbor basin predominantly occurs within the dredged area,showing relatively uniform distribution from the water intake open channel to the harbor entrance.Its maximum annual siltation intensity is 3.5 m,with total sedimentation of 1.25 million m3/a.Both annual siltation intensity and total sedimentation volume demonstrate the superiority of the fully encircled configuration over the semi-encircled design.These findings provide valuable references for engineering maintenance and future research.
