Abstract

The rapid reduction in sediment supply from the Yangtze River catchment and the construction of water-related engineering projects have influenced the overall river regime of the estuary.The paper conducted a systematic analysis of recent changes in the overall river regime of the Yangtze Estuary based on field-measured data and the varying water-sediment boundary conditions.The research focused on the evolutionary trends of the south passage riverbed and navigational obstructions,proposing regulating principles and strategies for the Second Phase Project of the South Passage Navigation Channel Regulation.The results indicate that the overall pattern of'three-level bifurcation and four outlets to the sea'in the Yangtze Estuary has approached stabilization.The evolution and development trends of the South Passage riverbed are generally favorable for channel construction and maintenance.Unfavorable factors remain in the bar section of the South Passage,including the downstream extension of the Jiangya-Nansha Shoal,divergence of tidal flow paths for flood and ebb,and insufficient sediment transport capability.Based on a comprehensive analysis,a multi-objective governance framework that integrates channel regulation and ecological protection was proposed,along with specific regulation strategies emphasizing'shore protection,channel stabilization,flow diversion,and sediment retention.'.
