Temple:Evidence and Claim Item for the Recovery of Sovereignty over Dongsha Island in the South China Sea in the Late Qing Dynasty
摘要
Abstract
The temples on Dongsha Island, such as the Dawang Temple and the Tianhou Temple, historically bear witness to the discovery, development, and management of the South China Sea by Chinese fishermen. These temples are not only activity centers, food supply stations, and important places for worshipping sea gods for Chinese fishermen, but also serve as spiritual support and safe harbors that bring comfort to their hearts. However,in 1907,the Japanese occupied Dongsha Island and demolished the temples and other facilities on the island, aiming to fabricate the illusion of a so-called"uninhabited island".The central government and the local government of Guangdong in the late Qing Dy-nasty started to negotiate with Japan, using the temples on Dongsha Island as strong evidence,to stress that Dongsha Is-land was not an uninhabited wasteland but an inherent territory of China and request the Japanese to withdraw from the island and pay compensation for the loss of temples and other facilities.Through many rounds of negotiations,China re-covered Dongsha Island in 1909.Thereafter,temples were rebuilt on the island, further safeguarding China's sovereignty over Dongsha Island.关键词
