Abstract

Facial emotion recognition is a crucial aspect of social cognition,playing an essential role in understanding others'emo-tions,forming social connections,and navigating social contexts.The ability to accurately recognize emotions from facial expressions is particularly important for ethnic minority children,whose social and cognitive development may be influenced by socio-cultural factors.This study focuses on Yi(ethnic minority in China)children as the primary research group,with Han children serving as the compari-son group.The aim of this research is to explore the differences in the performance of the facial emotion recognition between 10~13-year-old Yi and Han children in both same-race(East Asian)and other-race(Caucasian face)tasks,and to analyze how emotion rec-ognition abilities develop with age. The experiment involved 649 participants,including 195 Yi children and 454 Han children.The experiment utilized a total of 80 facial emotion images,consisting of 39 East Asian faces and 41 Caucasian faces.The emotions represented in the images included sad-ness,anger,fear,happiness,jealousy,surprise,disgust,shame,gratitude,compassion,and pride.The experimental procedure con-sisted of two phases.In the first phase(Task 1),participants performed a facial emotion recognition task for same-race(East Asian),in which two facial images displaying specific emotions(randomly selected from the image library)were presented on either side of the computer screen.Participants were required to judge whether the emotions depicted in the two images were the same.If the emotions were the same,they pressed the"left arrow"key;if different,they pressed the"right arrow"key.This phase involved 24 trials using only East Asian faces.In the second phase(Task 2),participants completed an other-race(Caucasian face)facial emotion recogni-tion task,like the first phase,but the facial images now included both East Asian and Caucasian faces.This phase also consisted of 24 trials. The results revealed significant findings from a two-way ANOVA(Task Type×Group).The main effect of task type was signifi-cant(F(1,647)=88.788,p<0.001,η2=0.121),with higher accuracy in Task 1(81.37%)compared to Task 2(76.22%).The main effect of group was also significant(F(1,647)=91.545,p<0.001,η2=0.124),with Han children performing signifi-cantly better(80.91%)than Yi ethnic minority children(74.27%).The interaction effect between task type and group was signifi-cant(F(1,647)=4.326,p=0.038,η2=0.007). A four-way mixed-design ANOVA(Group×Task Type×Age×Gender)revealed a significant interaction between task type,age and group(F(3,633)=5.03,p<0.01,η2=0.023).Simple effect analysis indicated that as age increases,Han and Yi children exhibit different developmental patterns in emotion recognition abilities.In the task of recognizing facial emotions within their own eth-nic group,Yi children show a significant improvement in accuracy with age,while Han children demonstrate a slight increase in accu-racy,which does not reach statistical significance.In the task of recognizing facial emotions of other ethnic groups,neither Yi nor Han children show a significant increase or decrease in recognition accuracy with age. This study provides empirical evidence for understanding the emotional cognitive development of ethnic minority children in China and reveals the unique developmental patterns in emotion recognition among Yi children.It offers valuable insights into the develop-mental trajectory of emotion recognition abilities and highlights the need for further research and support for the social cognitive develop-ment of ethnic minority children.
