Construction and Urban Transformation of Pingcheng during the Northern Wei Dynasty under Emperors Daowu and Mingyuan(398-423 AD)

Abstract
During the first year of the Tianxing Era(398 AD),Emperor Daowu of the Northern Wei Dynasty(386-534 AD)moved the capital from Shengle(盛乐)to Pingcheng(平城).The initial phase of the capital's relocation involved the construction of the imperial palace,the planning of the inner and outer city structures,the development of surrounding gardens and palaces,and the management of the water system.During the reign of Emperor Mingyuan(409-423),the construction efforts continued with further expansion of the gardens and palaces and the development of the outer city.However,there remains scholarly debate over several foundational aspects of Pingcheng's early construction,including the location of the newly established East Palace during the reign of Emperor Taiwu(424-452 AD),as well as the layout and boundaries of the outer city.A reexamination of these issues provides an initial framework for understanding the urban development of Pingcheng,setting the stage for further exploration of its architectural evolution and the daily life of its inhabitants during the reigns of Emperors Taiwu,Xianwen,and Xiaowen.关键词
