Abstract
Regret for the Past is a polysemous text.Over nearly a century of interpretation,scholars have widely noted its tragic portrayal of marriage and love,exploring its symbolic implications from perspectives of enlightenment dilemmas and women's liberation,with Juansheng's character becoming a focal point.Yet interpretations remain contentious.By adopting the"diary"form,Juansheng ostensibly gains agency for self-interpretation.However,when compared to the traditional"elegiac"genre,his role as a reflective subject reveals no intent to reconcile emotional debts to the deceased.Contrasted with modern con-fessional narratives,his identity as an enlightenment subject merely reiterates textualized clichés of enlightenment discourse.Fur-thermore,as a romantic agent,he fails to derive existential lessons from Zijun's death,instead fixating on justifying compromise and moral decline.This overarching self-negation reflects Lu Xun's ambivalence:while critiquing the dogmatized post-May Fourth ethics of love,Lu Xun remains entangled within them,conducting a deeply anxious"sandbox simulation"of an impending teacher-student romance.关键词
