Global Tethys tectonic domain and its spatio-temporal distribution

Abstract
The Tethys tectonic domain and its spatiotemporal distribution have long been a hot scientific issue in the field of geology.According to the latest research findings,the Tethys tectonic domain has far exceeded the spatiotemporal range limited by Suess.In terms of time,the Tethys tectonic domain is the ancient ocean and related continental shelf between the southern(Gondwana)ancient continents and the northern(Laurasia)ancient continents resulted from the disintegration of the Rodinia supercontinent from the late Neoproterozoic until the Neogene.According to the evolutionary history of the Tethys Ocean,from early to late,it can be divided into the Proto-Tethys(with a main expansion period of 540-400 Ma and a main subduction period of 400-280 Ma),the Paleo-Tethys(with a main expansion period of 400-280 Ma and a main subduction period of 280-200 Ma),the Meso-Tethys(with a main expansion period of 280-200 Ma and a main subduction period of 200-100 Ma),and the Neo-Tethys(with a main expansion period of 200-100 Ma and a main subduction period of 100-23 Ma).In terms of space,the Tethys tectonic domain consists of the southern margin of the northern ancient continents(Laurentia,Baltica,Siberia)and the northern margin of the southern ancient continents(Gondwana:South America,Africa,Australia,Antarctica),as well as the broad east-west corridor between them.According to geological characteristics,it can be divided from west to east into the Caribbean Tethys tectonic zone,the Western Mediterranean Tethys tectonic zone,the Eastern Mediterranean Tethys tectonic zone,the Zagros(West Asia)Tethys tectonic zone,the Himalayan Tethys tectonic zone,and the Southeast Asian Tethys tectonic zone.The Tethys domain exhibits obvious temporal periodicity and spatial zoning.关键词
