Abstract

The variation of the slope aspect can cause microenvironmental heterogeneity,affecting the assembly process of the plant community,plant community composition,and species diversity at the local scale.The vegetation characteristics of the shade and sunny aspects were studied in an alpine meadow on the eastern edge of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau in China to investigate the influence of the slope aspect on vegetation characteristics(functional groups,species diversity,and community composition)and community assembly in the alpine meadow.The results indicated that the plant community in the area was predominantly composed of upright-growing forbs,and hemicryptophytes.The species ratio of forbs,rosette type,stoloniferous type,geocryptophytes,and annual/biennial plants was lower on shade aspect than on the sunny aspect(P<0.05),while the species ratio of Compositae,erect type,cespitose type,hemicryptophyte,and geocryptophytes was higher on shade aspect than on sunny aspect(P<0.05).The species diversity was higher on the shady aspect than on the sunny aspect(P<0.01).The slope aspect significantly affected the plant community composition(P=0.001),and the similarity percentage(SIMPER)analysis demonstrated that the slope aspect explained more than 40%of the difference in plant community composition.The Raup-Crick dissimilarity metric demonstrated that the plant community assembly process on the shade aspect was primarily driven by stochastic processes,while deterministic processes mainly influenced the plant community assembly process on the sunny aspect.The results provide a theoretical foundation for the management and utilization of local alpine meadows.
