Abstract

Alfalfa(Medicago sativa)is the legume forage comprising with largest cultivation area in China.Fusarium oxysporum is an important pathogen causing root rot of alfalfa,which has a severe impact on alfalfa yields.The combination of arbuscular mycorrhizal AM fungi with Trichoderma longibrachiatum and other beneficial microorganisms to control plant diseases is an important strategy for biological disease management.In this study,we established the alfalfa-AM fungus-Trichoderma-F.oxysporum in the greenhouse to study the effects of the combined application of AM fungus Glomus versiforme and T.longibrachiatum on alfalfa F.oxysporum root rot.The incidence rate of root rot was significantly reduced by 58.8%(P<0.05)and 18.7%(P<0.05),respectively,by treatment of G.versiforme and T.longibrachiatum alone.The combined inoculation of the two was more effective,and the incidence rate was 81.8%(P<0.05)which was lower than that of the control.The total alfalfa shoot P content inoculated with G.versiforme alone increased by 116.4%(P<0.05)compared with the control.T.longibrachiatum did not significantly affect the P absorption and growth of alfalfa.However,the combined inoculation increased the dry weight and fresh weight of alfalfa shoots by 79.5%and 22.4%(P<0.05).The root dry weight and fresh weight of alfalfa were 210.5%and 262.5%(P<0.05).After the disease occurrence,the activity of superoxide dismutase(SOD)of alfalfa inoculated with G.versiforme significantly increased by 28.9%(P<0.05).Polyphenol oxidase(PPO)and catalase(CAT)activities were significantly reduced by 61.9%(P<0.05)and 29.11%(P<0.05).Meanwhile,there was no significant difference in peroxidase(POD)activity(P>0.05).AM fungi combined with T.longibrachiatum inoculation had the best control effect on alfalfa root rot.The findings provide insights into the combined application of AM fungi and T.longibrachiatum against F.oxysporum alfalfa root rot.
