Abstract

For ship structures,initial defects in stress concentration areas under fatigue loading are prone to develop into semi-elliptical surface cracks,and solving the crack opening displacement is very important for studying the propagation mechanism of fatigue cracks.An improved slice synthesis method is proposed for calculating the surface crack opening displacement of finite plates under elastic conditions.Firstly,numerical solutions of displacement are obtained using the slice synthesis method.Then,mesh models with different crack depth-to-length ratio(a/c),relative crack depth(a/t)and relative crack length(c/w)are established to obtain finite element solutions.Comparison result shows that the traditional slice synthesis method has limitations in the reasonable range of surface crack shapes.By fitting parameters to improve the traditional slice synthesis method,the displacement results under one-dimensional and two-dimensional stress distributions of one to three powers are verified,and the applicable surface crack shape ranges are obtained:0.25≤a/c≤1.00,0.05≤a/t≤0.40,0.05≤c/w≤0.50.The improved slice synthesis method can be used for the calculation of surface crack opening displacement and residual fatigue life prediction of finite plates under complex stress distributions.
