Textual research on the Chinese herb Bletilla striatain classical herbal works
摘要
Abstract
This study presents a systematic review and textual analysis of the Chinese medicinal herb Bletilla striata(Bai Ji),examining four key dimensions:nomenclature,morphological characteristics,ecological distribution,and harvesting/processing methods,based on historical materia medica literature.The findings indicate that eight distinct aliases for Bai Ji were documented in classical texts,with"Bai Ji"(白芨)emerging as the predominant contemporary designation.Morphological descriptions of Bai Ji were initially recorded in the Mingyi Bielu(《名医别录》,Supplementary Records of Eminent Physicians),demonstrating consistent alignment with the authentic species.The first illustrated representations appeared in the Bencao Tujing(《本草图经》,Illustrated Classic of Materia Medi-ca)during the Northern Song Dynasty,though these contained notable inaccuracies;subsequent illustrations either perpetuated these errors or adopted overly abstract representations until accurate depictions were established in the Qing Dynasty.Concerning harvesting and processing techniques,textual evidence spanning from the Wei-Jin period(e.g.,Wu Pu Bencao《吴普本草》)to the Ming Dynasty(e.g.,Bencao Yuanshi《本草原始》)recommended February as the optimal harvesting period,which contrasts with modern agricultural practices in major production regions.关键词
