Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effects of vernalization on the budding time and yield of artichokes.The artichoke varieties'Green'and'Imperial Star'were planted in this study.The phenological period,plant morphological traits,first bud traits,and yield of artichokes vernalized with different methods and for different time periods were compared.The results showed that both plumule-vernalization and seeding-vernalization for 14 and 21 days significantly shortened the time to budding,bolting,and harvest,with'Green'having the shortest time to budding(145.48 d)after 21 d of seeding-vernalization and'Imperial Star'having the shortest time to budding(143.20 d)after 14 d of plumule-vernalization.Both plumule-vernalization and seeding-vernalization suppressed the growth of plant height,leaf length,leaf width,stem diameter,first bud diameter,bud length,flower bud weight,and pedicel diameter.Compared with the treatment without vernalization,14 d of plumule-vernalization increased the number of buds per plant by 18.59%and 26.74%and the yield by 20.92%and 19.34%for'Green'and'Imperial Star',respectively.Seeding-vernalization for 21 d increased the number of buds per plant by 28.01%and 14.09%and the yield by 22.13%and 15.24%for'Green'and'Imperial Star',respectively.Overall,14 d of plumule-vernalization and 21 d of seeding-vernalization demonstrate similar yield-increasing effects,while plumule-vernalization has simpler operation and lower seedling cultivation cost.Therefore,14 d of plumule-vernalization can be adopted in the cultivation of artichokes in Hunan.
