Abstract

In order to prevent damage to turbine components caused by sediment over current and to reduce the hydraulic losses,a Francis turbine was taken as the research object.The Mixture multiphase flow model was used to numerically simulate the working conditions of different particle sizes of sedi-ment(0.26,0.20,0.12 mm),and the accumulation characteristics of sediment in the entire watershed of the turbine and the resulting hydraulic losses were analyzed.The research results show that the sediment volume fraction in the tongue of the turbine volute,the angle between the blades and the hub,and the bottom of the tailwater pipe is relatively high.Among them,the concentration of large particles(0.26,0.20 mm)sediment at these areas is as high as 10 times,5 times,and 5 times than that of the inlet boundary conditions,respectively,making it prone to accumulation.After adding sedi-ment particles,the pressure drop increases by over 60%in the volute and over 46%in the impeller blades.The sediment concentration and liquid-solid relative velocity inside the water turbine are posi-tively correlated with particle size.The larger particle size leads to a higher liquid-solid relative veloci-ty,which increases the drag force between the liquid-solid two phases,causing an increase in pressure drop in the basin and a decreased efficiency of the turbine.The research results can provide a theoreti-cal basis for optimizing the hydraulic characteristics of Francis turbines and the protective coatings for flow components.
