Comparison of hydraulic characteristics of different sidewall layouts of stilling basin

Abstract
The geometric shape of the sidewalls of a stilling basin directly influences the hydraulic characteristics within the basin.To explore the impact of this,CFD numerical simulation software was used with the RNG k-ε turbulence model and the TruVOF method.Four types of stilling basins-single-side gradual expansion,sudden expansion,double-side gradual expansion,and uniform-width,were simulated with a total of 12 sets of parameters.The experimental results for the recommended type of single-side gradual expansion stilling basin were compared with its numerical simulation results,and the two were found to be in good agreement.Further analysis shows that the vortex characteristics in the single-side gradual expansion stilling basin are similar to that in the sudden expansion stilling basin.When the expansion angle of the single-side gradual expansion basin exceeds 4.77°,the vortex strength increases sharply,which negatively affects flow stability.However,after the expansion angle exceeds 6°,the vortex strength remains almost unchanged.Compared to the uniform-width stilling basin,both the sudden expansion and double-side gradual expansion basins are able to shorten the length of the hy-draulic jump.The length of the hydraulic jump in the single-side gradual expansion stilling basin is equal to that of the uniform-width basin,and is less affected by changes in the expansion angle.Turbu-lent kinetic energy and energy dissipation rate are significantly influenced by the shape of the sidewalls.Among the basin types,the sudden expansion and single-side gradual expansion stilling basins provide the best energy dissipation performance.However,as the expansion angle increases and the sudden ex-pansion ratio decreases,the increase in energy dissipation rate becomes less pronounced.关键词
