Abstract

In 2024,China's refining capacity ranked first globally,yet shrinking profit margins prompted the petrochemical sector to advance the strategic transition toward"oil-to-chemicals conversion".Ethylene production capacity expanded significantly,but consumption growth lagged,causing localized overcapacity.Cost reduction and efficiency improvements became critical for competitiveness.This study focuses on the"three compressors"(cracked gas/ethylene/propylene compressors)steam process optimization under varied operating conditions of a megaton-scale steam cracking ethylene plant.Results show that optimized steam processes reduce ultra-high-pressure steam pipeline investments and boost power generation,but increase condensate loss and energy consumption.Replacing condensing steam turbine unit with back pressure turbine unit for the propylene compressor reduces condensate loss,lowering operational costs and energy use.Further steam process optimization for back-pressure turbine-driven compressors enhances power efficiency,achieving significant cost and energy savings.
