Electromagnetic power of lightning and its correlation with spectral characteristics

Abstract
The energy of electromagnetic radiation produced by lightning is a primary concern in lightning protection and research.Currently,there are few reports on studies of lightning electromagnetic radiation energy and its correlation with discharge channel parameters.In this paper,the peak electromagnetic power and the energy dissipated per unit length of the discharge channel during return strokes were estimated,using spectra from six multi-stroke negative cloud-to-ground lightning events captured by slit-less high-speed spectrographs,along with lightning electric field variation waveforms.The correlations among the spectral characteristics of lightning,the square of the core radius of the current-carrying channel,the negative square of the resistance,and the peak electromagnetic power were analyzed.The results show that the electromagnetic radiation of lightning is closely related to the total intensity of the ion lines in the spectrum and the energy dissipated per unit length of the discharge channel.There is a positive correlation between the peak electromagnetic power of lightning radiation and the total intensity of ion lines,as well as between the peak electromagnetic power and the energy dissipated per unit length of the channel.Additionally,the radius and resistance of the core current-carrying channel are important parameters affecting lightning electromagnetic radiation energy.关键词
